Should you call your mother mam, mom or mammy?

Or maybe even mum?

Maybe we should just ask Brenda Fricker?

THE IRISH MAMMY is universally accepted as a beloved creature but the debate about what to actually call her is far from over.

Do you refer to her as your mam or your mom? Perhaps you prefer to call her ma?

Or maybe even address her by her first name from time to time?

A new Mother’s Day survey carried out by GiftsDirect.com claims that mam is actually the most popular option among the Irish, with mum coming second, and mom and ma tied for third place.

Meanwhile, the good old mammy trails behind as the fourth most popular option.

What on earth is the world coming to at all?

In more positive news for the main women themselves, the survey suggested that most Irish people think about their mammies every day, with the majority never having been apart from her for more than one month at a time.

However, a third of those questioned revealed that they rarely if ever told their mammies they loved them, and almost half confessed that they did indeed still fear the almighty wooden spoon.

When asked who’d make the best mother in Ireland, a staggering 50% opted for Brendan O’Carroll’s Mrs Brown, followed by Mary Robinson, Mrs Doyle, Amy Huberman and Miriam O’Callaghan.

They only asked about 200 people in fairness, so we’re guessing it’s not exactly the most accurate representation of the population’s views.
